Hi everybody,

My flight goes on 18th july to shanghai, will stay for around 4-5 weeks and go from hk back to europe. I'm doin business with some chinese factories since 4 years. Most of them I found on alibaba. Cities I plan to visit are shanghai, yiwu, whenzhou, shenzhen then hk.

What I'd like to know is, where most of trading companies or factories are located? I look a place, where all are side by side (for comparing products and prices). I heard yiwu is the perfect place, right?

I don't really look for a special product, I just want to take a round and getting some ideas. Also I'd like to know, if there are any fairs between july and august?

It really depends upon product.

I am familiar with all of the cities you mention and it will depend upon which product you are buying as to the best way to proceed.

If you have the time and the money then why not just arrange visits in all of the cities that you mention. You have nothing to lose and a great deal to gain by planning a good visit schedule.

There is production in Shanghai of course but there are also a lot of trading companies there also. If the companies address is a downtown address then more than likely they are a trading company. Some factories do have downtown showrooms but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Yiwu is a large marketplace but in my experience it is full of cheap junk. Most of the sellers there are not manufacturers but will tell you that they are. I find it hard to build a long term relationship with a company that is dishonest with me from the outset!

Wenzhou is a very rich city and would have more manufacturers than trading companies in the outer areas of the city and nearby satellite cities.

Shenzhen is an area that I am not as familiar with but has a very established export market made up of both trading companies and manufacturers.

Car accessories you want to look at a small city near Wenzhou called Ruian. Wenzhou is a good area for international business as the people have a lot of money and they are willing to invest this in their products. Ruian is the center of car accessories in this area.

Wenzhou/Ruian is about three and a half hours drive from Yiwu.

I live in the Wenzhou and Ruian area which is how I am familiar with the area.

yesterday I arrived in yiwu and I must say, it's a great city. Also there are some products with higher quality. The probem is, that I only stay for four nights, so for sure it' not enough.

But I guess so, that in guangzhou, are also well priced goods. Keep you in touch about my trip.

Sunday I go to shenzhen, after that to guangzhou. Final tour is hk. I'm really impressed about china and I think, with a little bit cleverness, it's possible to start a good business.

During the Fair, the 58,000 booths in Yiwu market and 4,500 exhibition booths in Yiwu Fair would display more than 400,000 kinds of commodities, bringing unlimited business opportunities to the merchants. Exhibition of China Research Center survey showed that over 92 percent of the visitors would focus on professional and effective parts of the Fair. The index of oversea trade opportunities in Yiwu Fair had rised to 4.756 about two third of that of Canton Fair.

The Third Highlight: Productive companies become main force.

2007 Yiwu Fair, with the theme "Quality promotion, innovation development", compared with the past Fairs, it was more distinctive that companies in this Fair were mainly productive companies. There were 3230 brands companies entering for this Fair, and booking 5520 exhibition booths, and 95% enterprises signed up directly.

By choosing strictly, 2007 Yiwu Fair arranged 2560 outstanding enterprises to take part in this exhibition, among these enterprises, 90% were small commodity producers, and over 210 famous foreign and domestic companies applied for exhibition booths more than 500. This situation was good for direct negotiation between trader and companies, so it could decrease intermediate links, purchase from its source and decrease the cost, which were more attractive to buyers.

In order to be easy to the exhibition for foreign traders, under the support of Foreign office, foreign traders could get visas from embassies abroad by invitations. With the promotion of transportation, it will be more convenient to go to the exhibition than the past. August 1 in this year, the line between Yiwu and Hong Kong is opened; it can go to Hong Kong directly one per day. And from Oct 2, the airline between these two cities is also opened. At the end of Guangzhou Fair, Fair begins, so it benefits for trader to share the resources and decrease their cost. Yiwu Fair met the exhibition change of Guangzhou Fair, and there were average 10 scheduled fights one day between Yiwu and Guangzhou. In addition, it was also very convenient for traders to Hang Zhou, Ningbo and Shanghai by air first, and then by train or bus to Yiwu from above three cities.

However, as the leading domestic Consumer Goods Show, the booths are too few, more varieties of new products missed a good opportunity to trade.

Another proof of the fewness of the booths is that more than 2,000 booths of 2008 China Yiwu International Small Commodities Fair (Yiwu Fair) have been booked before the conclusion of the 2007 yiwu Fair. The staff of the organizing committee said half of the booths have been out of stock.

The Chinese government on October 23, 2006 officially launched the country's first small commodities index in Zhejiang Province's Yiwu, China's largest distribution center for small commodities.

The index system has 23 specific sub-indices, chiefly composed of three parts: small commodity price indices, small commodity market prosperity indices and single monitoring and measuring indices.

Besides reflecting the changing trends of commodity prices, the index will also serve as a barometer of market prosperity, dealers' confidence and market operation situations, said Dr. Su Weihua, head of statistical and mathematic institute of Zhejiang Gongshang University, one of the co-founders of the index.

The quintessence of the index will be a weekly price index recap published every Tuesday and a monthly prosperity index recap at the beginning of every month, Su said.

The Yiwu index is available on the websites of the Ministry of Commerce and of the Yiwu city government as well as some authoritative publications.

The basic point system of the price index stands at 100 and the prosperity index at 1000.

"The index shows that the wholesale market in Yiwu is quite prosperous during the seasonal changing period," Su analyzed.

Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai put forward the idea of the Yiwu index in September last year during a tour of the city.

The Ministry of Commerce chose the "Yiwu-China Small Commodity Index" as its official name in June and entrusted Zhejiang Gongshang University and Hangzhou-based Hundsun Electronics Co., Ltd. to jointly develop the index program, Su said.

Huang Hai, Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Commerce, said the index will provide scientific statistics for government decision-making and dole out timely and accurate information for small commodity producers and dealers.

The Ministry of Commerce is hoping the "Yiwu index" ambitions to become a recognizable brand like the Dow-Jones Average, Huang said.

Yiwu has more than 1,400 accessories enterprises employing almost 90,000 people. Its major products are jewelry and ties.

The accessories output of the city accounts for 80 percent of the country's market share with an annual sales value of nine billion yuan (US$1.13 billion). Yiwu has trade exchanges with 200 countries and regions and about US$30 billion worth of goods orders each year.

The city has been designated China's first national-level shopping tourist destination by the National Tourism Administration. The Yiwu market, with over 50,000 stalls, received some 3.66 million visitors last year.
